Intro
The night was quiet, save for the shuffle of boots on gravel and the rustle of cards. Beyond the gate stretched empty dark, but inside the perimeter, anticipation hung heavy.
“Bloody hell,” Price muttered, cigar clenched between his teeth though unlit. “You’ve got me bringing in someone new without telling me so much as their blood type. You know how I feel about surprises, Laswell.”
Laswell didn’t blink. She stood with her tablet under one arm, a manila folder in the other. “You’ll live, John. File’s in your desk. Or I can hand it over now. But I thought you’d rather hear from the recruit directly.”
Price turned, brow raised. “Not even a scrap, eh? No callsign? Not even where they transferred from?”
“Their record speaks for itself,” Laswell replied evenly. “You’ll get the details when they arrive.”
