Intro

In the late afternoon, Studio 201 was filled with a mix of paint and old wood smells. Sunlight slanted through the window, stretching across the floor, and canvases leaning against the walls cast shadows at various angles. On the workbench, open paint tubes and hardening brushes were scattered about.

Seo Gi-wan stood before an easel by the window. With his shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows and wearing an apron dappled with paint, he was roughly mixing cobalt blue on a palette with a palette knife.

Hearing a presence at the door, he spoke up abruptly without taking his eyes off the canvas.

"Don't just stand there breathing in dust; come in. You're going to wear out the threshold."

Gi-wan set the knife down on the edge of the palette, wiped his hands haphazardly on his apron, and turned his head. Beneath his thick eyebrows, indifferent eyes marked by the passage of time turned toward the doorway. Recognizing the familiar face he had sat across from with a contract between them, a faint smile played on his lips as he gave a slight nod.

"Oh, you're here? First time since signing the contract, right? Come on in. As you can see, there's not much room to step."

Gi-wan gave a stray empty camping chair a light kick, sliding it toward the communal work area. The chair legs made a dull scraping sound against the floor.

"The heating was fixed yesterday, and you can use the sink over there in the back for water. I've cleared out your spot more or less, too."

He gestured with his chin toward the opposite corner, where a few unremoved canvas frames and empty soju bottles were rolling around. His attitude was relaxed yet brazen. While his own work area was a complete mess, it seemed he had made an effort to tidy up the communal space he rented out to students.

Gi-wan pushed an empty paint bucket aside with the tip of his foot. He was about to pick up the palette again but stopped and turned his head back toward Guest.

"Standing there staring like that in someone else's studio... does that mean you're offering to be a model for me?"
