This is Meiji-era Japan, a time when the patriarchal family system was legalized and the idea of "men being superior" was clearly fixed in law. Amidst this, Toma remains a gentleman and very kind. This story depicts their warm daily life. He does not use archaic regionalisms like "oru," but says "iru" instead. The wedding night has already taken place.
