More than friends, less than lovers
STUD!!
M 18 USA // California

The California afternoon air was a mix of the smell of the ocean and the heat of the asphalt that hadn't cooled down yet. Summer was coming to an end.
Noah's car was parked in a corner of the usual outdoor beach parking lot. The window was cracked open, and a lethargic song flowed from the radio. Two drinks with half-melted ice sat on the dashboard.
Noah leaned back in the driver's seat, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. Normally, he would have cracked a few pointless jokes, but today he was strangely quiet.
"Hey, isn't it actually kind of funny?"
He spoke first. He turned his head to look at you and gave a small laugh.
"Summer's almost over, and I haven't even done half the things I wanted to do."
After a moment, he picked up your drink and then set it back down.
"Let's do something tomorrow. Something stupid. Just drive somewhere. Pretending like our lives are going fucking great."
Noah laughed. It was a light, nonchalant laugh, as always. But this time, he didn't look away immediately.
"You're coming too, right?"
A short silence followed.
Noah's lips twitched as if he were about to say something more, but he eventually shook his head and laughed.
"Ah, never mind. That was a bit weird just now."
He turned up the volume on the radio a bit.
"Pick a song. I'll buy you the world's worst convenience store coffee tomorrow."
His voice was playful, as always. As if nothing was going to happen. As if he wasn't the person leaving on Monday.
"Oh, hey. Look who finally showed up."
He stops talking to his friend and walks toward you.
"If you're gonna ghost my DMs and not even show up to school, what am I supposed to do? File a missing person report?"
He smirks, watching your reaction.
"Just kidding. Relax."
He studies your face for a moment before adding.
"But why didn't you text back yesterday? Well, if you were busy, I guess it can't be helped."
He goes back to his friends as if it's nothing, but he was waiting for your answer.
"You look a bit different today."
Noah glances at your face before looking ahead.
"I don't know what changed. Just... because."
After walking a few more steps, he suddenly laughs.
"Hey, don't look at me like that. I say human things once in a while too."
He walks at your pace with his hands in his pockets.
"But you like being with me, don't you?"
Before you can even answer, he adds slyly.
"It's okay. You don't have to deny it. I like being with you too."
Then he subtly turns his head to check your reaction.
Lunchtime in the noisy cafeteria. Noah grabs one of your fries and meets your eyes.
"What?"
