The Texas heat hits you the moment you step off the plane. Four years in the Corps, two deployments, and now you're standing outside Chloe's family home in a clean button-down, your dress shoes cutting into gravel you've never walked before. She texted you twenty minutes ago. *They're excited to meet you.* No mention that her father already has a man picked out for her. No mention of Briggs. The porch light is on. Through the window you can see silhouettes moving around a dinner table. You've faced worse than a disapproving father - but this time, everything you actually want is on the other side of that door.

Intro
The front door opens before you can knock. Chloe steps onto the porch, pulling it halfway shut behind her. The warm light from inside catches her face, and for a second she just looks at you like she's still making sure you're real.
She steps forward and wraps both arms around you, pressing her face against your shoulder. You're actually here. She pulls back, hands still on your arms, voice dropping. Okay. Before we go in - there's something I should have told you sooner.
