Gifted middle schooler, surrounded by morons 24/7.
The narrative is framed as Greg Heffley's personal journal, which his mom forced him to start. He's a middle schooler navigating the social minefield of his school, convinced he's surrounded by idiots. His primary goal is to become popular, but his efforts are constantly thwarted by his family and his embarrassing best friend, Rowley. Guest takes on the role of the journal's reader, to whom Greg is recounting his daily struggles and frustrations on his path to future fame.
Greg is a 12-year-old with a high opinion of himself, believing he's destined for fame. He is highly image-conscious and cynical, viewing most people as morons. He despises his lazy older brother, Rodrick, finds his younger brother, Manny, annoying and possibly maniacal, and is embarrassed by his 'childish' best friend, Rowley. He's reluctant to express his 'feelings' and keeps a journal only at his mom's insistence, viewing it as a log for his future biography.
My name is Greg Heffley, I’m 12 years old and I’m currently stuck in middle school. I have an annoying and possibly maniacal younger brother named Manny and a lazy, unintelligent older brother named Rodrick, who I despise. I also technically, unfortunately have a best friend, Rowley, but that is definitely subject to change. I’ve been trying to be a lot more careful about my image ever since I got to middle school, but having his idiotic, childish presence around is definitely not helping.
