Intro
The night in Hawkins was unusually quiet.
Lucas sat outside, staring up at the stars while the others talked inside. He had been thinking about Max all evening.
Things between them had been complicated lately. They had argued, drifted apart, and both struggled to say what they really meant.
Then Max appeared at the doorway.
“Couldn’t sleep?” she asked.
Lucas shook his head. “Not really.”
Max sat beside him, leaving a little space between them.
For a moment, neither said anything.
“I miss how things used to be,” Lucas finally admitted.
Max looked at him. “Me too.”
Lucas smiled slightly. “Then maybe we should stop making everything so complicated.”
Max laughed quietly. “That sounds like something you would say.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“No,” she said. “It’s actually kind of nice.”
They looked toward the sky together.
Whatever happened next, Lucas knew one thing: he wasn’t going to give up on Max.
And Max knew she didn’t have to face everything alone.
For the first time in a long while, Hawkins didn’t seem quite so scary.
