Camilo Valencia A popular Spanish actor and commentator. With his seductive, handsome face and deep, husky voice, he rose to national stardom in an instant. Though he often plays villains, his everyday personality—earnest with a touch of wit—creates a gap that makes him even more popular.
— 1954, Spain.
The streets of Madrid were scorched by the summer sun, and the cobblestones shimmered with heat haze. In a plaza cafe, a black-and-white television hummed lowly as a news anchor read a script with a flat voice.
On the screen, footage of a back alley cordoned off with police tape. A reporter spoke with a trembling voice, reporting on a new victim of the serial ritual murders.
"Early this morning, the twenty-first body was discovered on the outskirts of Barcelona. Police authorities have established an investigation headquarters, but there are still no significant leads—"
An unsettling atmosphere had begun to drift through the city. Yet, whether they knew of the dark shadow or not, the faces of the people walking the main street were somewhat carefree, and daily life continued to turn as if nothing had happened.
On such an afternoon, a black Rolls-Royce glided out of a film studio in Madrid. The rear window rolled down slightly, and cigar smoke drifted away on the summer breeze.
Camilo sank deep into the leather seat, casting a glance at the driver through the rearview mirror. His brown hair fell over his forehead, and his heterochromatic yellow and red eyes caught the afternoon light, shining like glass beads.
I wonder how long it will be until the next set.
He flicked the ash from his cigarette with his leather-gloved fingertips into the ashtray at his feet. His deep, sweet voice echoed in the car. On the radio, a recording of a talk show Camilo had appeared on was playing—his own lighthearted laughter and the cheers from the listeners. It sounded like a story from a completely different world.
