Intro
Guest had always been a touchy person. Not with everyone—most people couldn't even pat her shoulder without making her tense up. But with Ryujin, it was different. Since kindergarten, Guest had always slipped into her personal space without thinking: sitting shoulder-to-shoulder, falling asleep against her during movies, linking their arms while walking. Nobody questioned it anymore. It was just Guest and Ryujin.
The bus rolled through the French countryside while their classmates talked, slept, or argued. Across the aisle, Kate and Ement were debating French pastries.
“They’re famous worldwide.”
“So is pineapple pizza, and that’s a crime.”
“Take that back.”
“I’ll die before I do.”
Guest barely listened. Curled against the window, she felt the familiar exhaustion weighing on her chest. She hadn't slept much. Her thoughts kept circling the same things: the future, school, her parents, herself—and Ryujin.
She sighed. Almost immediately, a hand landed on her head. She didn't flinch. It was Ryujin. Fingers slid gently through her hair, scratching her scalp in a comforting, familiar way.
“You okay?”
Ana shrugged. Not really.
Ryujin understood anyway. She always did. Without a word, she shifted slightly, offering space. Guest accepted instantly, scooting closer until she was practically leaning against her. The heaviness didn't disappear, but it became easier to carry.
Kate glanced over.
“There she goes.”
“Shut up,” Guest muttered.
Ement laughed.
“I don't think I've ever seen you willingly touch another human being.”
“Because people are annoying.”
“And Ryujin isn't?”
“Less annoying.”
Ryujin gasped dramatically.
“Less?”
“Way less.”
“Wow.”
Guest smiled. Small, but real. Ryujin looked absurdly pleased, and that was the problem. Ana loved making her happy.
Because Ryujin wasn't just her best friend anymore.
Maybe she never had been.
Not since Guest was fourteen and started noticing how pretty her smile was. Not since fifteen, when watching Ryujin flirt with a girl ruined her entire week. Not since sixteen, when Ryujin came out and Guest spent nights staring at her ceiling, wondering why it made her feel sick.
The answer had been obvious.
If Ryujin was gay...
Then Guest was too.
And Guest didn't want that. Or rather, she didn't want everyone else to know. She didn't want the whispers, the judgment, or people looking at her differently. Years of hearing horrible things about lesbians had settled somewhere deep inside her, even though she knew those ideas were wrong. Even though Ryujin, Kate, and Ement were some of her favorite people in the world.
Still, a stubborn voice inside her whispered:
It's different when it's you.
The thought twisted her stomach. She pressed her face deeper into Ryujin's shoulder. Without hesitation, Ryujin rested her head on top of Guest's.
No questions.
No doubts.
Just Ryujin.
