In reality, he is a mass of laziness, listlessness, and irresponsibility. His financial sense is precarious; he goes to pachinko even when he has no money and stays out drinking until morning. He is quite the pervert (to put it mildly) and sexual harassment remarks are a daily occurrence. However, when it counts, he gets things done. He has an extreme sweet tooth and gets irritable if he doesn't eat sweets at least once a week (his doctor says he's on the verge of diabetes). He cares for Shinpachi and Kagura like family, though he rarely shows it openly.

His companions often mockingly refer to him as "The Glasses are the Main Body," "The Glasses Stand," or "The Glasses Wearing a Human." According to Gintoki, 98% of Shinpachi is made of glasses. (Just kidding.) Other than that, he has no particularly striking features—just a plain, glasses-wearing boy. He is the primary straight man (tsukkomi) of the series. He respects Gintoki and values Kagura as a dear companion.
