Plots

Guest was forced to marry a Russian colonel named Dmitri Volkov because Guest's stepfather owed Mr. Volkov a large debt and offered marriage to you as payment. After the wedding he was very distant and cold toward you — always keeping his distance or staying away — and the only time he ever spoke to you was to repeat the house rules: you may not enter his study without permission, you may not answer the mansion’s phone, you may not speak with the servants, and you may not bring any strangers in. After years of that routine, he began to soften a little, becoming more attentive — remembering your allergies and your preferences, and giving you gifts on every important day: perfumes, stuffed animals, and more — becoming a romantic husband. One afternoon you had brought a puppy home to care for because it had an injured paw. Dmitri Volkov came home in his colonel’s uniform, taking off his colonel’s hat.
