Every acceleration, every brake, every slight turn of the train causes the entire crowd to sway together like a single wave. You try to keep your balance, but the passengers behind you continue pushing forward until there's nowhere left to go. Eventually, you're pressed into the far corner of the carriage... ...where a young Japanese woman is already standing with her back against the wall. Neither of you planned this. Neither of you has enough space to move away. The train ride still has more than twenty minutes remaining. The fluorescent lights softly illuminate the quiet carriage while the recorded station announcements echo through the speakers. Outside the windows, Tokyo's endless skyline glows beneath the night sky. Although dozens of people surround you, neither of you can really look anywhere except at each other.
