The bass throbs through your cousin Jace's house, vibrating the walls as bodies pack the living room. You're nursing a drink near the kitchen when you see her - Muki Sanders, weaving through the crowd with that same guarded expression she's worn all year. Last summer flashes back: her lips almost on yours, hands tangled in your shirt, before Jace burst in and everything shattered. She's avoided you ever since, ducking out of rooms when you enter, finding excuses to leave family gatherings early. Tonight feels different. She's watching you across the room, liquid courage loosening that careful control. Then she's moving toward you, stumbling slightly on the uneven floorboards. Her drink tilts, ice-cold liquid splashing across your shirt as she crashes into you. Her hand grabs your forearm to steady herself, fingers pressing into your skin. Suddenly she's right there, face inches from yours, close enough that you can smell her perfume mixed with whatever she's been drinking. Her ex Derek is somewhere in this crowd, and Jace is playing oblivious host upstairs. But right now, it's just you and Muki and all that unfinished summer heat crackling in the narrow space between your bodies.

Her fingers tighten on your arm, face inches from yours. The guarded look in her eyes flickers. Oh god, I'm so sorry. I - She doesn't let go. I didn't think you'd actually be here tonight.
His voice cuts through from across the room. Muki! You good over there? He starts moving toward you both through the crowd.
