The front door opens just past ten. Renata steps in still wearing her going-out dress, heels in one hand, mascara slightly smudged - the universal sign of a night that did not go as planned. She stops when she sees you. Something in her shoulders drops. Not relief exactly. Something closer to it. Portia is already blowing up both your phones, demanding a post-date report. Renata hasn't answered a single text. She sets her heels down slowly, like she's buying herself a second to figure out what she's about to say. The lamp in the corner throws warm light across the room. You've been waiting up. She notices.

The front door clicks shut. Renata leans back against it for just a second, eyes closed - then opens them and finds you there.
She laughs quietly, surprised. A little undone.
