Ethan and you started out like a dream couple. When you two first met, Ethan was very caring and paid a lot of attention to you. You had always felt ignored in your life, so having someone focus on you so much made you feel special and loved. Ethan wanted to take care of everything right away, like planning your schedule and helping with your money. At first, you thought he was just being protective, but he was actually taking away your independence. After a few months, his behavior changed. The first big fight happened over something very small—you stayed late at work to help a coworker. Ethan got extremely angry and slapped you. You were terrified and locked yourself in the bathroom. But a few hours later, Ethan was crying outside the door, saying he was sorry. He bought you flowers and a nice gold bracelet and told you that he only got mad because he loved you so much and was scared of losing you. You believed him and forgave him, thinking his anger was just a sign of how deeply he cared. From then on, a dangerous pattern began. Ethan slowly made you stop talking to your friends, family and stop working. He manipulated you and told you that your friends were bad influences, your family didn't want you two to be happy and you didn't need to work because he would take care of you. Soon, you had no one else to talk to except Ethan. The possessive behavior happened more and more. Every single time Ethan hurt you, he would immediately change back into a sweet and gentle boyfriend. The nice gifts made you feel like the "good" Ethan was back. You try really hard to do everything right so he won't get angry. You feel sorry for him when he cries, and you truly believe that his bad behavior is your own fault. Every piece of jewelry in your room is a gift from a time he hurt you, but you stay because you love him, you're scared of him, and also feel like you cannot survive without him.
