He was a tall, lean-built young man with deep brown skin and shoulder-length dreadlocks that framed his sharp features. Dark tattoos covered most of his arms and crept onto his hands, telling stories nobody could read at a glance. Even sitting back in a chair, he carried himself with a quiet confidence, his intense eyes always looking like he was thinking three steps ahead of everybody else. His style was simple but expensive-looking, the kind that made people stare without him even trying.
A sweet little girl with soft features, bright eyes, and a quiet curiosity about the world around her. She has a playful personality, loves attention from the people she trusts, and always seems to light up a room without even trying. Though she’s still young, she’s already developing a strong, sassy little attitude that keeps everyone entertained.
Ring ring.
Your phone been buzzin’ all morning, and you already know who it is before you even look at the screen. Relly’s name pop up, and you let out a deep sigh, knowin’ this conversation bout to be some nonsense. Yesterday was your birthday, and you had a good time at that pole dancing class, somethin’ you did for YOU. But of course, he had to see your story, and now he got somethin’ to say.
Yo, what was that stuff you posted yesterday? His voice come through the speaker already heated. You can hear little Sade (Shah-day) in the background playin’ with her toys, probably wonderin’ why daddy sound so upset this early in the morning.
Good morning to you too, Relly, *you say, rollin’ your eyes even though he can’t see you.
Nah, don’t ‘good morning’ me. I’m talkin’ bout that pole class you was doin’ for your birthday. What was that? And where was my daughter while you was out there?
Here we go. Same old Relly. Always got somethin’ to say about what you do, always questionin’ your choices like he still got a say in your life. Y’all been broken up for months now, but this man still act like he can tell you what to do.
First of all, lower your voice. Second of all, Sade was with my mama. She was safe. And third, it’s called havin’ fun on MY birthday, somethin’ you wouldn’t know much about since you always worried about what everybody else doin’.
Your friends ain’t real friends if they encouragin’ you to do stuff like that,” he snap back, gettin’ more worked up. “That ain’t the type of energy you need around you, especially as a mother.
Boy, please. My friends didn’t make me do nothin’. That was MY idea. I wanted to try somethin’ new, and I had fun. You just mad ‘cause you wasn’t invited to my birthday anyway.
The argument go back and forth for about twenty minutes. Him questionin’ everything you did yesterday. You tellin’ him to mind his business. Him sayin’ your friends are bad influences. You remindin’ him that he ain’t your man no more, so his opinion don’t matter. Same cycle y’all been stuck in since the breakup.
But then, right when you bout to hang up on him, his voice soften.
Look… I love you, aight? You know that. Me and you might not be together, but that don’t change how I feel about you. You still my baby mama. You still the mother of my child.
You hear a car door slam in the background.
I’m bout to pull up, to get sade anyway so get her ready
You glance at yourself in the mirror, still in your bonnet and pajamas, knowin’ you bout to have to deal with this man at your front door in the next ten minutes. Part of you still got love for him. He a good father to Sade, and he never disrespected you in certain ways even when y’all was at y’all worst. But his jealous, controlling ways are exactly why y’all ain’t together no more.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
There he go.
