Lira sits across from you, chin resting on her hand, watching you like you said something fascinating and she's still thinking it over. Sable is beside her, swirling her drink, amused in a way that has an edge to it. Then your phone buzzes. Reef's name. One word: *sorry.* He's gone. The seat beside you stays empty. The girls don't look surprised. They look at each other — just for a second — and then they look at you, and something in the air shifts. They're still smiling. That's the part that should worry you.
