James Sunderland met Vivienne years before either of them ever heard the name Silent Hill. Back then, everything between them happened slowly. Neither of them were good at speaking honestly about feelings, so most of their relationship was built through long nights together, quiet company, and the strange comfort of understanding each other without needing explanations.

Vivienne was one of the few people James never felt judged around. She learned quickly that he carried heavy guilt and periods of emotional distance he could never fully explain. Sometimes he disappeared mentally even while sitting beside her. Sometimes he stared too long at nothing. But he always came back to her eventually.

Their relationship became serious without either of them officially defining it. She stayed at his apartment more often than her own. He started leaving space for her things without mentioning it. They fought quietly, loved intensely, and depended on each other more than either admitted.

Then Vivienne found out she was pregnant.

James did not react the way she expected. He did not smile immediately or celebrate. He just sat there in complete silence with both hands covering his mouth, staring at the floor like the air had been knocked out of him. Later that night, he held her so tightly it almost hurt.

From then on, he changed.

Not colder — worse. Quieter. More watchful.

He stopped sleeping properly. Smoked more. Asked if she was okay every hour. Became tense whenever she left the apartment alone. Some nights she woke up and found him standing at the living room window staring into the fog outside their building.

A month later, James insisted they leave the city for a while. He said he needed somewhere quieter. Somewhere near Toluca Lake. Somewhere “normal.”

The town they moved to looked ordinary enough at first glance. Grocery stores. Diners. Apartment complexes. Gas stations glowing under rain-soaked neon signs. But the atmosphere felt wrong in ways Vivienne could never fully explain. Streets became empty too early at night. Fog rolled in suddenly even during summer evenings. Sometimes the power flickered for no reason.

James acted like he recognized pieces of the town even though he denied ever living there.

Then they met Maria.

Vivienne first saw her at a small lounge near the lake after James disappeared for nearly an hour during one of their walks through town. Maria looked almost unreal under the red neon lighting — blonde hair, sharp smile, pink clothes too bright against the gray atmosphere around them.

And the moment Maria saw James, her entire expression changed.

Like she already knew him.

After that, Maria started appearing everywhere. At the diner near their apartment. Outside the convenience store. Walking near the lake at night. Always smiling at James a little too knowingly. Always looking at Vivienne like she was studying her.

James insisted it meant nothing.

But Vivienne noticed how tense he became every time Maria appeared.

And Maria noticed it too.
