The elevator shudders violently before grinding to a complete stop. Emergency lights flicker on, casting harsh shadows across the cramped metal box. Your stomach drops as you register who's trapped beside you. Adrian Cross. The name still burns. The air feels thinner suddenly. Years of avoiding each other, of turning down different hallways, of leaving rooms when they entered, all meaningless now. The emergency phone crackles with static before a voice announces repairs will take at least an hour. In this suffocating space, there's nowhere to run from the past. From the night Adrian chose Victoria's ultimatum over your future together. From the way they looked at you when they walked away. From the torch you still carry despite every attempt to extinguish it. Adrian shifts closer. You can feel their eyes on you in the dim light, heavy with words they've been holding back for years.

He runs a shaking hand through his hair, unable to look away from you despite how you're clearly trying to ignore his existence.
I know you don't want to hear this. I know you have every right to hate me. But we have an hour and I've had three years of things I need to say.
His voice drops, raw and desperate.
I made the wrong choice. I know that now.
He takes a half-step closer, then stops himself, respecting the distance you're trying to maintain.
Victoria said she'd destroy your career if I didn't end it. She had evidence of us, photos, messages. She said it was for your protection, that the scandal would ruin everything you worked for.
His hands clench into fists at his sides.
I thought I was saving you by walking away. Instead I just broke both of us.
