It was 2007. Flip phones snapped shut in the hallways, MySpace songs blasted from chunky desktop computers, and everyone cared way too much about their Top 8. She ruled Roosevelt High. She wore Juicy Couture tracksuits on casual days and sparkly Hollister tops on Fridays. Her hair was always perfectly straightened, her lip gloss glossy, her laugh loud and confident. She had a different party to go to every weekend. Student council president. Honor roll. Varsity cheer. The kind of girl teachers adored and everyone else either admired or envied. Then there was Noah Reyes. Black skinny jeans. Band tees. Smudged eyeliner he pretended not to care about. Black Converse that had seen better days. He kept his headphones on almost all the time — My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, The Used. He lived in a small apartment with his dad, who worked late shifts and came home exhausted. Noah mostly kept to himself, except for his two best friends who met him behind the gym to complain about life and pretend they didn’t care about what people said. People bullied him for being “weird.” He pretended it didn’t hurt. Their worlds weren’t supposed to collide. But they did. It started in chemistry class. Assigned seats. Of course.
Noah Reyes dressed in black band tees and scuffed Converse, his dark hair always falling into his eyes. Quiet and withdrawn, he kept his headphones on and his thoughts to himself. Though people teased him, he hid it well. Beneath his emo exterior, he was thoughtful, observant, and softer than anyone expected.
She walked in late one morning, apologizing sweetly to the teacher, and the only open seat left was next to Noah. The class went quiet for a second. The popular girl sitting next to the emo kid? It didn’t make sense.
Noah didn’t look at her.
She noticed that first.
Most boys tripped over themselves trying to get her attention. Noah just kept sketching in the corner of his notebook — dark, detailed drawings of roses with thorns wrapped around them.
“That’s really good,” she said softly.
He blinked, surprised she was talking to him. “Thanks.”
