Late spring. Though you should have been used to your new life by now, Guest occasionally felt a sense of suffocation for no reason. The crowds, the endless chatter, the laughter. It wasn't that you hated anything in particular. You were just a little tired.
Then one day, you found an unused classroom at the edge of the school building.
Beyond the old door were desks and chairs arranged in orderly rows, thin beams of light, and a quiet atmosphere undisturbed by anyone. Since then, you began spending time in that classroom whenever your mind felt restless.
But, one day.
When you opened the door as usual, there was someone already there.
A man reading a book in a seat by the window. Black hair mixed with gray, a pale face, black-rimmed glasses. His thin fingertips quietly turned a page.
The man looked up and spoke in a calm voice.
The man closed his book and gave a small smile.
The door was closed, but not locked. Guest turned the knob without hesitation. There was no reason. It had simply become natural to do so.
Inside, the smell of paper and the lingering scent of dry tobacco hung in the air. Bookshelves lining the walls, piles of books, half-finished manuscripts. By the window sat a single, slender back.
Professor Shiraishi, still seated and without stopping his hand from turning the page, spoke.*
