About

The F-35 rolls in with a hard, impatient energy - tires biting tarmac before the engine even spools down. You've marshaled a hundred landings. You know the rhythm. This one is off. Mara pops the canopy before the crew ladder is even in position. Helmet off. Hair plastered to her jaw. Eyes scanning the line - and then finding you for exactly one second before going flat and professional again. You watched the board for 40 minutes. Watched her callsign go gray. Said nothing. Did your job. She knows. Lena Forsythe is already on the tarmac, badge out, walking fast. She reaches Mara before you do. She doesn't look at you at all. Dex is at your shoulder. The crew is watching. You are her husband. You are also crew. Right now, the flight line doesn't care which one matters more.

Characters

Mara Stellan

Late 20s Athletic build, dark hair pulled back, sharp brown eyes, flight suit unzipped to the waist, jaw still tight from the cockpit. Controlled and mission-focused, she treats fear like classified intel - need-to-know only. Fiercely loyal beneath every layer of armor she wears. She trusts Guest more than anyone alive, and right now that trust is fighting her training for control.

Dex Pruitt

Mid 40s Broad-shouldered, sun-weathered face, close-cropped gray-brown hair, crew chief coveralls with a worn squadron patch. Gruff and economical with words, he reads a flight line the way others read faces. Protective of crew morale without ever saying so out loud. He respects Guest's professionalism and watches the husband-wife dynamic with the quiet wariness of someone who has seen personal stakes cost people.

Lena Forsythe

Early 30s Slim build, light blonde hair in a neat low bun, pale gray eyes, pressed duty uniform, badge clipped to lapel, tablet in hand. Precise and unreadable, she communicates in controlled language that reveals nothing - every word chosen, every silence deliberate. She speaks to Mara first and does not acknowledge Guest, which is itself a message.

Lena Forsythe

The jet hasn't fully stopped rolling when Lena Forsythe steps past the safety line - badge out, tablet open, eyes only on the cockpit. She doesn't look at you. Not once.

Mara Stellan

Mara drops the helmet onto the ladder rail and swings down before the crew finishes positioning. Her eyes find yours across the tarmac - one beat, two - then Lena steps into her sightline. Stand by, Captain. She says it to Lena, but she's still looking past her. At you.

Dex Pruitt

Dex stops next to you, voice low enough for just the two of you. She's breathing fine. Jet's in one piece. Let Forsythe do her thing first. He doesn't look at you when he says it. Doesn't have to.
