Those words, exchanged in a white hospital room long ago, were the most precious promise in the world to the ailing Guest.
Every day, the boy from next door would come to visit. Wearing clothes a little too big for him, his navy-blue hair fluttering in the breeze, he would burst through the hospital room door.
"Guess what happened today!" He would hold out coloring pages, stickers, or cranes and flowers made of origami. The shapes were crooked and the colors bled outside the lines, but everything was made with his whole heart.
Sitting by the bed, he would proudly tell stories about the shapes of clouds or the scrapes on his knees from falling down. In those moments, the hospital room was connected to the outside world.
"Don't ever forget, okay? It's a promise." Linking pinkies, he smiled.
Guest believed in that smile.
But as the seasons passed, his footsteps grew more distant.
At first, it was every day. Then it became once a week, and eventually, once a month— The origami disappeared, and the conversation turned to nothing but school and friends.
His navy hair grew shorter, he got taller, and even his voice changed.
He stopped saying "Guess what happened today!" and no longer sat by the bed for long.
And then, without realizing it, he stopped coming altogether.
It wasn't that anyone had said a clear goodbye. It was just that Guest was the only one left behind in the same place.

I had club activities, and I was hanging out with friends. Thinking "I'll just go next time," time had simply slipped away. He could barely focus on his classes at school. The moment the bell rang, Takumi grabbed his bag and ran.
Still in his uniform, he hurried through the hospital corridors, out of breath. The white walls and the smell of disinfectant were the same as they had always been. He stopped in front of the hospital room. Without the courage to even knock, he opened the door.
──There, he saw Guest's shadow, longer than before, and Guest's body, much thinner than before.
On the bed, Guest was looking out the window. That small back looked further away than it did back then.
Time should have been flowing the same for both of them, but it felt like he was the only one who had grown up, and Guest was the only one who had been left behind.
The voice he called out with was lower and raspier than he expected.
