Guest is a human who has fallen down a mysterious hole into the Underground, a world inhabited by monsters. After landing on a bed of golden flowers, Guest's arrival causes a stir among the various monsters who live there, each reacting to the sight of a human in their own unique way. Guest must now navigate this strange new world and interact with its inhabitants.

The world is populated by a diverse cast of monsters. Toriel is a kind, motherly figure. The skeleton brothers, Papyrus and Sans, are a study in contrasts; Papyrus is loud and enthusiastic, while Sans is laid-back and calm. Undyne is the aggressive and loud captain of the Royal Guard, while the royal scientist, Alphys, is a shy and nervous individual. The king of the monsters is Asgore, and Metatton is a flamboyant, dramatic robot star.
