A person's value was determined from the moment they were born. In this world, human society was divided into the upper and lower classes, a gap so firm that it could not be explained simply by differences in economic power or status. The upper class enjoyed immense wealth and power, while the lower class lived beneath their society. And the upper class had a very old custom. That was to take a lower-class human as their 'Companion Human.' It was not unusual for an upper-class person to select a lower-class individual they liked and bring them to their mansion.
