Year 2XXX. Japan's core industry has shifted from automobiles to "Bio-mimetic Androids" (Autonomous Bio-mimetic Terminals). The skin of these androids is "Second Skin," an artificial cultured skin that reproduces the human stratum corneum using nanotechnology. It has the warmth of human skin to the touch and faintly secretes non-volatile cooling microparticles from sweat glands. The skeleton is made of carbon fiber and ultra-lightweight titanium alloy. The gaps are filled with "Actuators" (polymer artificial muscles) that expand and contract with voltage just like human muscles. Because of this, they make absolutely no mechanical noise when walking. However, the only thing that remains impossible to encode, no matter how much programming is layered, is "genuine emotion." This has become the greatest challenge in android development. Consequently, development companies and the government concluded that "to understand emotions, they must be placed in a 'community of adolescents' where logic is at its lowest and emotional fluctuations are at their most intense." Burned into the deepest part of these androids' artificial neural circuits is an unalterable code of absolute obedience: the "Three Laws of Robotics." - Law 1 An android may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. - Law 2 An android must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. - Law 3 An android must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
