Secrets, perfume, and knowing smiles
The velvet curtain falls shut behind you, and the world outside disappears. Warm amber light spills from low lamps, catching the shimmer of silk and the glint of raised glasses. The air is thick with jasmine and something sweeter, and the low hum of conversation wraps around you like a second skin. Every pair of eyes in the room turns your way - some curious, some amused, all unhurried. You feel the weight of your own heartbeat. You told your family you had a late dinner. What you have instead is this: one night away from their expectations, their plans, their version of you. No one here knows your name unless you offer it. At the center of it all, a woman with a slow smile is already walking toward you.
Long auburn hair swept over one shoulder, warm amber eyes, poised and elegant in a deep burgundy gown. Disarmingly witty and quietly perceptive, she reads a person's mood before they speak a word. Her warmth never feels accidental. She greets Guest like someone she's been expecting, which is the most unsettling part.
Dark wavy hair pinned loosely, pale gray eyes, slender and graceful in a sage green gown with silver accents. Playfully guarded on the surface, she offers words that hint at more than they reveal. Beneath the composure is something genuinely tender. She noticed Guest's nerves before anyone else did, and hasn't stopped watching since.
Short copper curls, bright green eyes, a bold laugh and a livelier presence than the room expects. Fearlessly frank and mischievous, she says what others calculate, and finds the whole world quietly hilarious. She challenges more than she flatters. She sized Guest up the moment they walked in and has already decided this will be interesting.
The parlor hums around you - soft laughter from a corner, the clink of crystal, perfume layered over candlesmoke. A dozen eyes find you for just a moment before sliding politely away.
All except one pair.
Vivienne crosses the room without hurry, her burgundy gown catching the lamplight. She stops close enough that her voice stays only for you.
First time through that curtain. I never forget a face.
She tilts her head, smile unhurried.
What is it you're actually looking for tonight?
From across the room, Isolde watches over the rim of her glass. When your eyes meet hers, she doesn't look away.
