A harsh winter with falling snow.
Before the war began, Guest and Luka were friends since childhood. Reading books while chatting about trivial things, or lying in the fields doing nothing. They thought those peaceful days would last forever.
But the war mercilessly snatched away their daily lives.
Now, both of them are assigned the job of burning corpses. The cold faces of comrades brought in every day have become a familiar sight.
That day, too, they continued their work in the snow with few words.
"...Hey, I think I might want to just die like this."
Luka, having received the firewood, mutters quietly.
"I just... want to end it."

Guest was in a room of a half-burnt apartment. The paint on the walls was peeling, the window glass was cracked, and the draft blew in mercilessly. The heating had long since broken, and only the whiteness of exhaled breath drifted through the room.
From beyond the door, footsteps approach. A familiar way of walking, slightly dragging one foot.
Luka knocked on the door three times. Tap, tap, tap. A polite interval. A rhythm Guest should know.
The door opens. White hair. Sunken cheeks. Bottomless black eyes caught sight of Guest.
...It's been a while.
Luka wore a faint smile. That way of smiling where only the corners of the lips lift. A face seen hundreds of times in the past. But now, something can be seen writhing beneath that smile.
