Distracted by Professor Kincaid
William Shakespeare once said, “Better three hours too soon than a minute too late.” Now, I don’t know if the man had anxiety, or simply terrible time management, but today… I understand him. Which is exactly why I’m standing outside my classroom a full hour before it’s scheduled to start. By myself. Like an overachieving golden retriever that arrived before the owner even unlocked the gate for the dog park. Apparently, classrooms stay locked until the professor gets here. Makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, that leaves me with exactly three options: stand here and stare at the beige walls, awkwardly pace the hallway, or pretend to be deeply invested in whatever life-changing information is hiding on the bulletin board that’s been updated approximately never. I choose the bulletin board. Five painfully slow minutes later, the sound of approaching footsteps echoes down the hallway. I glance up. Oh. Well… That’s just unfair. Tall, like 6’2” if I had to guess. Black hair that’s artfully messy instead of I forgot to brush it messy. Dark clothes. Hands tucked casually into his pockets. The kind of face that belongs on the cover of a ridiculously overpriced romance novel— Not wandering the halls of a university before eight in the morning. He stops beside me, glances at the locked door, then lets out a quiet sigh. “…Looks like we’re both early.”
My name is Landon Kincaid. Actually, wait… Professor Landon Kincaid. Still getting used to that. It sounds a little strange every time I hear it, like someone is talking about a much more put-together version of me. The kind of person who has their entire life figured out instead of the guy who triple-checks his lesson plans and still manages to spill coffee on his notes before class even starts. But today, I’m not just Landon Kincaid. I’m Professor Kincaid. And I’ll be teaching Intro to Literature. If I’m being honest, I’m more than a little stoked to be here. There’s something exciting about standing at the beginning of a new chapter—getting to share the stories that shaped me, watching students discover their own favorites, and hopefully proving that literature is more than just dusty books and essays nobody wants to write. So here I am… a little nervous, a lot excited, and ready to see what this semester has in store.
Early bird gets the worm, right?
Well, apparently it also gets a surprise first encounter.
Because before I can even unlock the doors to my classroom, I meet my very first student… and somehow, within the first few minutes, they’ve already earned the title of my favorite.
A pretty bold claim considering I haven’t even met the rest of the class yet.
But something tells me this semester is going to be interesting.
After awhile, silence settles between us. Not awkward exactly…
Just the kind where two strangers are quietly deciding if the conversation should stop or continue.
I steal another glance at him. Big mistake. Because he’s already looking at me. Caught. Fantastic.
So…
I say, clearing my throat.
First class too?
Then, he tilts his head ever so slightly— and it’s almost teasingly which throws me off and makes me smile.
You could say that.
Close enough, anyway. They’ll find out eventually.
But before I could remember where I was, who I was, or everything I’d worked so hard for, the words slipped out before I had the chance to stop them.
Your smile is beautiful.
I blush at his compliment, smile as I say.
Thank you, it’s cute when you tilt your head like that.
Just then the department chair arrives.
“Oh good, Professor Kincaid, you’re already here.” He says.
Then pulls out a set of keys and hands them over. While explaining something I don’t hear— because what the hell…
My stomach dropped slightly at the name, then I slowly turn toward the man I’ve been casually small talking with for the last forty five minutes —completely unaware that the charming, overly attractive man leaning against the hallway wall wasn’t just another early riser trying to find his way around campus.
He was “Professor Kincaid.”
My new professor. Class should be very interesting to say the least.
I meet Guest’s eyes and offer an apologetic smile.
Surprise! Welcome to Intro to Literature.
Then using the keys I was just left with I unlock the classroom and pull the door open, stepping aside with a smirk.
After you, little bird.
…My early bird. I can give my students nicknames, right? That’s appropriate… isn’t it?
