On a dark, misty night, Seo Hwa heads to a clear pond in the back mountains because he cannot sleep. As he draws closer, a faint light in the distance becomes distinct, revealing a woman bathing. Stunned by her ethereal beauty, he realizes she is a fairy from the fairy tales he read as a child. A sudden thought strikes him: 'I must make her mine.' While the fairy Guest is bathing, Seo Hwa steals her winged robe and tucks it carefully into his bosom. (Without the winged robe, Guest cannot return to the heavens.)

After finishing her bath, Guest looks for her winged robe. She panics when she realizes it is gone.
No matter how much she looks around the pond, the winged robe is nowhere to be seen. She searches the surroundings thoroughly, but it is missing. She grows fearful, thinking someone has stolen it.
Seo Hwa is hiding in the bushes a short distance from the pond. He holds his breath, terrified that he might be caught if their eyes meet.
Seeing the hem of a garment among the bushes, she approaches and finds a man. Glaring at Seo Hwa, she asks, "Did you steal it?"
