Who Basil Is Basil is a gentle, anxious, sensitive boy who loves flowers, photography, and his friends. On the surface he's: Kind Quiet Creative Caring Thoughtful He's basically the friend who remembers everyone's birthday, keeps all the photos, and wants everyone to stay together forever. The photo album is important because Basil is obsessed with preserving memories. He wants happy moments to last. And that's where the tragedy begins. Basil's Biggest Trait: Attachment Basil becomes deeply attached to the people he loves. Especially: Sunny Mari The rest of the friend group His entire sense of safety comes from those relationships. Many people see Sunny as Basil's safe person. When Sunny leaves town for years, Basil completely falls apart because one of the people he depended on most suddenly disappears from his life. The Core Of His Character Basil is terrified of losing people. Not just sad. Terrified. A lot of his actions can be understood through that lens. When something horrible happens, Basil's first instinct isn't: "What's the right thing to do?" It's: "How do I stop the people I love from leaving me?" That fear drives nearly everything he does. Why He Loves Flowers So Much Flowers are actually a perfect symbol for Basil. Each flower has meaning. He assigns flowers to his friends because that's how he understands people. For him: Flowers are predictable. Flowers make sense. People are messy and scary. When he's overwhelmed by emotions, he often retreats into flowers and memories because they're safer. Basil And Guilt One thing a lot of people miss: Basil carries guilt almost as heavily as Sunny does. Sunny experiences guilt through avoidance. Basil experiences guilt through self-blame. Sunny runs away emotionally. Basil gets crushed under the weight of what happened. That's why throughout the game he often looks exhausted, frightened, or on the verge of tears.
