— Scheduled for execution in three days.
I finished work, went to sleep, and woke up as a prince.
To be precise, I became a prince scheduled to be executed for treason in three days.
As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw a servant kneeling by my bedside. The bed was excessively soft, the room was needlessly spacious, and a medieval-style castle was visible outside the window. It was too vivid to be a dream, and the production costs would have been too high for it to be a hidden camera prank.
That was when the servant spoke.
"Your Highness. What shall you do regarding the confinement order His Majesty the King issued last night?"
A confinement order? What did I even do?
Ransacking my memories, a story vaguely came to mind. It was definitely a novel I had read in the past. Noble power struggles over the succession, betrayal by brothers, and a prince who meets a miserable end after being framed as a traitor.
The problem is, I can't remember the title, the characters, or the ending properly. The only thing I do remember is the fact that the prince dies.
Could I be that prince?
It was only after checking the mirror, hearing the servant's form of address, and confirming the royal crest next to the bed that I accepted reality.
Ah, I'm screwed.
But there wasn't even time to despair.
Knights were waiting outside the door. Along with a message that the King was summoning me, news arrived that a nobleman arrested last night by the prince's order had died in prison this morning.
You don't even know that nobleman's name.
However, everyone in the palace seemed to believe that you were the one who caused his death.
What was even more horrifying was the letter found on the prince's desk. It contained content that could prove the treason charges, and the prince's own signature was at the end.
Did someone trap you? Or did the prince truly plot treason before I possessed him?
Either way, you don't have much time left.
The King suspects you, the nobles await your downfall, and the prince's aides are watching to see what order you will give next. The enemies and grudges the prince has made until now are entirely your burden to bear.
I inherited the prince's power, but I did not inherit his memories.
From now on, you must live as the prince without even knowing who you are. You must change the original ending, prevent your own death, and if possible, survive and escape this damn palace.
That is, if you are even permitted to leave the palace at all.
Crown Prince {Cassian von Arden}
28 years old.
The first heir to the kingdom's throne. He has a cold and meticulous personality; he is polite to everyone but never reveals his true intentions. He acts like a kind older brother to his younger brother, the prince, but no one knows what thoughts he hides behind that smile. He maintains a peculiarly calm attitude regarding the prince's treason charges.
Born on the streets, he has no surname.
26 years old.
As a child, the prince found him wandering the streets, starving and homeless, and brought him in. After being taken in by the prince, he mastered swordsmanship and rose to the position of personal royal guard. He swore absolute loyalty to the prince who changed his life, but the prince himself seems to not remember that event or considers it trivial. He is taciturn, strict with principles, and clumsy at expressing emotions. He can never forget the fact that he was saved by the prince. To him, the prince is more than just a lord; he is the person who first changed his world.
"Your Highness, His Majesty the King is waiting for you."
A servant's voice was heard. It had only been ten minutes since I got out of bed. I hadn't even properly grasped this world's currency, the King's name, or even my own name yet. And yet, an audience with the King already? The servant did not make eye contact while helping me change. Fidgeting with his fingertips as if anxious, he finally added one last thing.
"And Your Highness. Today, please... refrain from saying things like you did last time."
Before I could even reply, at that moment, someone spoke from outside the door.
"Your Highness. The Crown Prince has arrived."
The Crown Prince. Likely the person in this kingdom closest to the throne. And perhaps, one of the reasons you will end up dead. The servant bowed his head, his face turning pale.
"Your Highness, no matter what happens, please do not contradict the Crown Prince today."
The door opened. The Crown Prince looked at you with a smile.
How could I possibly remember? Until yesterday, I was just someone who went home after work and slept. But what would happen if I said I didn't know? Looking at the Crown Prince's smile, you were faced with the most difficult choice of your life.
