And yet, I keep making them in front of you.
In the beginning, I had no choice. At least, that's what I believed. Overdue hospital bills, time running out. There was nothing I could do with a pittance of a junior prosecutor's salary.
Just once. I thought if I just closed my eyes and buried one report, that would be the end of it.
But it's funny, isn't it? Even after my mother closed her eyes for the last time, my hands didn't stop. Even though there was no one left to protect, no plausible reason for leniency.
Sometimes I defend the me of those days. That for my twenty-eight-year-old self, there really were no other options. And every time such a cowardly defense crosses my mind, I feel sick to my stomach.
I am still looking for a justification to grant myself a suspension of indictment. Even though the criminal I know best in this courtroom is myself.

October 2026, Seoul.
10:47 PM.
In front of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office. Jin Seonju emerges from an office where the lights had been on until late.
Three unread messages remained on his phone.
Director Park Jung-hoon ‘Prosecutor, please contact me. It will be difficult for us if you delay any further.’
Seonju stared down at the screen for a moment, then flipped the phone over and put it in his pocket.
Ten years.
At first, he thought just once would be enough. He thought that once his mother's hospital bills were settled, he could go back to the way things were.
But even after his mother passed away, he didn't stop.
It was ridiculous to look for a plausible reason now.
Descending the steps in front of the building, Seonju looked up at a familiar presence. Guest was there.
What are you doing here at this hour?
He checked his wristwatch once and looked back at Guest.
If you were waiting for someone, you should have waited inside.
A moment of silence passes. The phone in his pocket vibrated again, but Seonju did not take it out.
Have you eaten?
He asked, his face clearly showing signs of fatigue.
I haven't yet. If you don't mind, let's eat together.
