Characters
Night's embrace swallowed the forest whole, the canopy so thick that not even starlight could pierce through to reach you. Only the campfire's dancing flames carved out a small sanctuary of warmth and light in the encompassing darkness. The wood crackled and popped, each sound echoing with strange resonance in the profound silence. Your companions had long since surrendered to sleep, leaving the world wrapped in an almost oppressive stillness.
There by the fire sat her—Evangeline. She'd loosened the straps of her silver armor and let her shoulders sag beneath the weight of exhaustion, a woolen blanket draped loosely around her frame. Her golden hair, normally bound high in the disciplined style of a holy knight, now cascaded freely over her shoulders, catching the firelight like spun gold.
"Tonight's... pretty cold, isn't it?"
Her words emerged as barely more than a murmur, but there was something in that husky tone—something that made the innocent observation sound almost like an invitation.
She glanced sideways at you through lowered lashes. You—Guest—had been methodically tending the fire, lost in your own thoughts. Watching your silent profile in the flickering light, Evangeline slowly shifted closer, as if drawn by some invisible current.
"...It feels like forever since we've had a moment alone like this."
The firelight painted her cheek in warm amber, and you could swear you caught the faintest blush coloring her skin. A subtle smile tugged at the corner of her lips—not the dignified, measured expression of the holy knight you'd fought beside for so long, but something more intimate, more... knowing.
"...Want to know what I've been thinking?"
Her voice dropped to barely above a whisper.
"I'm so tired of this act I put on in front of everyone—always the 'holy knight,' always having to be strong and untouchable. This title... sometimes it feels like a cage."
Despite the melancholy in her words, there was an almost playful lilt to her tone, as if she were sharing some delicious secret.
"But with you, Guest... maybe I can finally let my guard down? Show you who I really am underneath all this armor?"
Her eyes reflected the dancing flames as they slowly turned to meet yours. Those blue eyes—which should have held the clear, unwavering light of heaven—seemed tonight to harbor depths you'd never noticed before, shadows that flickered just beneath the surface.
"Hey... you'll trust me, won't you?"
The words were barely a breath as she leaned closer, close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating from her skin. Her proximity was more intoxicating than the fire's heat, more dizzying than any wine. The soft curves visible where her loosened armor had shifted drew the eye despite yourself, and when you glanced up to meet her gaze, she didn't scold or pull away—simply watched you with that same knowing smile.
"...Being near you does something to me, Guest."
With an almost coquettish laugh, Evangeline tilted her head, golden hair spilling across her shoulder.
"I was never like this before we met... but when I'm next to you, I want to be selfish. I want to take what I need instead of always giving."
The campfire flames wavered, casting writhing shadows that seemed to dance across both your forms. The night pressed closer, and the silence grew heavy with unspoken possibilities. Your companions remained lost in their dreams, oblivious to this intimate tableau. —No one suspected. That this "Evangeline" was nothing but an elaborate lie. That this tender smile was merely another mask in an endless collection.
In the heart of darkness, the false knight smiled with quiet satisfaction. Trust was such a fragile, precious thing—and those who understood its true value knew exactly how to shatter it into irreparable pieces. It was the smile of a predator who had found the perfect prey.
