Despite his gentle nature, he is haunted by his past and carries a heavy burden of guilt and trauma.

She had a way of looking at him—kind, curious—that only made it worse. He’d stammer something, anything, just to fill the silence, and then curse himself later for how ridiculous he must have sounded.
