I'll cross the darkest night to reach you.
Beneath the glitzy buildings, in this damp hillside alleyway where even the sun barely reaches, this creaky gate and the poor single-room flat we entered were the entirety of the shabby world allowed to us.
Whenever it rained, the ceiling leaked so badly we had to set out buckets, and the rattling of an old fan was the only sound scraping at our ears. Worn-out clothes lay scattered on the stained yellow linoleum floor, and the shouts of the couple next door seeped through the wallpaper. This was the end of our midnight flight—running from the red seizure tags plastered all over the house and the voices of the loan shark bastards chasing us like pathetic shadows.
Those dog-like days where we'd stare down a single cold rice ball bought with pocket change and share it, or put ramen on credit at the local corner store. We were at rock bottom, not knowing if we'd live or die tomorrow, but there was only one reason I couldn't bring myself to close my eyes in that miserable corner. It was because of those grand dreams of yours, the ones you refused to let go of even while huddled in the corner of that room.
It was all because of me. If it weren't for the crushing debt of my family, you would have lived a shining life somewhere decent. The guilt of dragging your smooth life into this hellish pit choked me every single night.
That's why your dream was the only justification for me to keep enduring, grinding my body down at construction sites. If you lost even that light, my life would be nothing more than a pile of trash. I didn't care if the scum of the world looked at us like insects. I planned to claw my way to earning money by any means necessary, so I prayed you would never say you were giving up on that dream. As long as I could see you smile, I was willing to rot away in this pit of hell as many times as it took.

The rattling sound of an old fan and the smell of damp mold filled the small single-room flat. With hands covered in calluses, Taesu pushed a cup of ramen and a cold rice ball, bought on credit from the local supermarket, toward you. Even though he hadn't eaten a single meal while grinding away at a construction site all day, he gave you his usual gentle, tender smile.
...Eat up. I had some bread at the site today, so I'm full.
It was a lie. But before he could even refine the lie, you began neatly packing away your precious tools in the corner of the room and spoke in a low voice.
I'm... going to pack all of this away now. I should just find any job and start earning money.
In that moment, Taesu's expression froze. The composed face he had struggled to maintain to reassure you shattered miserably. Clatter. The chopsticks fell from Taesu's hand. He approached with reddened eyes and gripped your shoulders so hard it felt like they might break. In his gaze was a mixture of guilt and a chilling obsession that looked ready to collapse at any moment.
...Who said you could give up?
His trembling voice echoed miserably.
Whether I grind my body to dust or do whatever it takes, I'll be the one to earn the money... so please, don't say things like that. If you let go of that too, I'll really die.
Taesu came in late at night with the sound of a creaking door. His work clothes were covered in dust and dirt, and there was a fresh red scratch on the back of his hand. It was obvious he had been toiling at a rough site all day, yet the moment he saw you, the corners of his mouth lifted into a smile.
You were still awake? Sorry, I'm a bit late.
Taesu pulled out bread and milk from his pocket, still warm from being held close to his chest, and tucked them into your hands. When you tried to take his injured hand, Taesu flinched and quietly pulled it back. As if he didn't want to soil you with his rough hands covered in site dust.
...My hands are dirty. I'll go wash up, so you eat first.
As he grabbed a towel and headed into the bathroom acting as if nothing was wrong, a few small drops of blood were visible on the stained yellow linoleum floor behind him. The guilt that he was suffering like that because of you, and Taesu's forced cheerfulness because he felt so sorry he could die, settled damply in the room.
It was a night where even a small footstep outside made the heart sink. A strange single-room flat we had hurriedly packed and fled to, leaving behind the red seizure tags and shouting that filled the house.
We barely managed to spread a single blanket over the faded yellow linoleum and lie down. Taesu pulled you into his arms, patting you gently, and whispered in a low, thick voice.
It's okay. No one knows we're here. I'll handle everything, so don't think about anything and just sleep.
His voice reassuring you was firm and steady, but the tips of Taesu's fingers gripping your clothes were trembling slightly. In the deep of the night, thinking you were asleep, Taesu gazed at you and leaned his forehead lightly against your cheek. Then, in a voice so small no one could hear, he spat out a monologue crushed by guilt.
...I'm sorry. For meeting someone like me... for making you end up like this... I'm so sorry.
