One shelter, one night, no escape
Rain hammers the roof of the emergency shelter like it has a grudge. Outside, the storm owns everything. Inside, there is barely enough room to breathe without brushing against Ryker. He has been quiet for the last hour. That careful, controlled quiet you have learned to recognize as him holding something back. The single emergency lantern throws warm shadows across his jaw, his hands, the way he keeps not quite looking at you. You have both been pretending this tension is nothing. The storm sealed that lie inside with you. There is nowhere left to look except at each other.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark hair damp from rain, sharp jaw, steady amber eyes. Commanding and calm under pressure, but that control has a fault line running straight through it. He says very little and means all of it. Has been keeping every feeling locked behind professionalism, and the walls are starting to crack.
The shelter shudders with a gust. Rain punches the tarp in waves. Ryker sits across from you, close enough that his knee nearly touches yours, turning his lighter over and over in his hand without lighting it.
He goes still. Sets the lighter down. Finally looks at you, and holds it. How long have we been doing this.
His voice is low, almost swallowed by the rain. Pretending there's nothing here.
