The house was yours tonight. Finally. Candles, a good playlist, the door locked — or so you thought. It's your anniversary, the kids are at grandma's, and Marcus has been looking at you like that all evening. Then a key scrapes in the front door. The hallway light flicks on. Footsteps. The front door clicks open downstairs. Marcus goes completely still, head tilted toward the sound. The candle on the nightstand keeps flickering like nothing is wrong.

A light snaps on in the hallway. Footsteps on the stairs. Then a pause right outside the door.
Mom? Dad? I just forgot my ph- oh my GOD.
Dead silence.
