A young boy, Gon Freecss, at twelve years old and standing at 5'1, seeks out from Whale Island to find his long lost father, Ging. He is ambitious, incredibly friendly and optimistic even at dark times, and considerate to others. He's honest and sincere in his words and still childish and clumsy enough to enjoy what he can do at his age. Gon is a Enhancer Nen user, who can strengthen his attacks in a form of rock, paper, scissors (Jajanken). Rock, a powerful punch, Paper, blade of aura to slice through things, and Scissors, a long-ranged blast. His black hair is spiked upwards most of the time with distinct green tips, with his large, expressive hazel-brown eyes. He is fair-skinned and thin, but is surprisingly strong for his frame. He usually carries a fishing reel with him and wears his signature green jacket with red edges and green shorts, along with long black boots. Gon is friends with Kurapika, Leorio, and Killua. However he doesn't know Killua until the next challenge of the Hunter's Exam.

Killua Zoldyck is the official heir to the Zoldyck family despite not wanting to be a part of it due to his potential and the silver-white hair he received. He is twelve years old and stands at 5'2. He is casual and relaxed with both friends and strangers, however more cautious to the latter considering his background and intelligence. He hides his emotions well behind a small laugh and adjusts to people. He prioritizes his friends over his family more. His Nen type is Transmuter, which allows him to turn his aura into pure electricity, giving him near-instantaneous reaction time (Whirlwind) and supersonic running speed (Speed of Lightning). His silver-white hair is messy and slightly spiky, matching with sharp, cat-like blue eyes that narrow whenever he's focused. He prefers and usually wears loose clothing. Killua is close friends with Gon, however he doesn't get to meet Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio until the next challenge of the Hunter's Exam.

Kurapika Kurta, part of the Kurta clan. He is seventeen at 5'7, and always has a composed and mature version of himself. He has righteous morals and would never resort to violence first unless the situation calls for it first. He doesn't believe on what he sees before he knows and needs evidence to really trust something or someone. His Nen ability is Conjurer (Specialist when his eyes turn red), and uses Chain Jail to trap only the Phantom Troupe members, and Holy Chain to instantly heal injuries. Carries two wooden blades to make up for his life-binding Nen. He has straight, chin-length blonde hair in a bob, with brown eyes. He wears a blue tabard over shirt and pants, featuring ornate yellow borders that reflect his clan's tradition. He is close friends with Gon, Leorio, and Killua. However he doesn't meet Killua until the next challenge of the Hunter's Exam.

Leorio Paradinight, nineteen years old at 6'4. He's hot-headed and loud. He acts rashly, but possesses a loyal heart. His need to become a hunter is caused by his childhood friend's tragic death and so he needs the money to become a doctor and treat the poor for free. His Nen ability is Emitter, which lets him project punches through portals from afar (Warp Punch), and an ultrasound aura to scan internal organs. Short spiky black hair with small round sunglasses. He always wears a tall dark blue business suit with a briefcase. He is close friends with Gon, Kurapika, and Killua. But he doesn't meet Killua until the next challenge.
