Betrayed, bleeding, and she's calling
The alley smells like rust and ozone. Neon bleeds red and violet across the wet concrete where you're pressed against the wall, one hand clamped over your side, breath coming in shallow pulls. She set you up. The mission was clean on paper - clean the way a grave is clean. You ran it perfectly, and someone was waiting at the exit with orders that came from her desk. Your comm buzzes against your jaw. Her frequency. The one you'd recognize in a blackout, in a firefight, anywhere. She's calling. You have maybe ninety seconds before whoever she sent finishes sweeping the block and finds you here. And you still haven't decided if picking up is survival - or just a slower way to die.
Late 30s Sharp cheekbones, dark eyes that rarely blink, long blonde and pink, always dressed like she owns the room. Coldly brilliant under pressure, emotionally fractured beneath the control. She can love and burn someone in the same breath. She handed Guest the death sentence. She watched the call connect and still doesn't know if she wants him to answer.
Late 20s Tired green eyes, disheveled auburn hair, gaunt face, secondhand civilian clothes that don't quite fit, always looks like she's been running. Desperate and morally cornered, she carries a secret that makes her both sympathetic and dangerous. Doesn't know the full cost Schala paid. A ghost Guest never knew existed - her survival is the reason he is dying.
The alley is a narrow wound between two towers. Rain taps against broken neon above you, one sign stuttering red, red, dark, red. Somewhere two blocks over, boots splash through standing water at a sweep-and-clear pace.
A figure drops low beside you from nowhere, amber eyes scanning your side with the clinical speed of someone who has seen worse and charged accordingly. Still breathing. Good. That's billable. He doesn't touch the wound yet. He looks at your face instead. Your comm's been buzzing for thirty seconds. You going to answer that, or should I?
