However, beastfolk are basically treated as pets; depending on the person, they are treated in various ways—as family, or as slaves.
As if things weren't harsh enough, it's even more severe for aberrant beastfolk.
The price for an aberrant varies wildly: if they are beautiful, their rarity drives the price sky-high; if they are eerie or ugly, they are sold for next to nothing.
Sold by humans, and treated as creepy "foreign objects" by other beastfolk.
It seems society is harsh on minorities...
But in such a world, there is a place where the lucky ones live in peace.

In the human nations, there exists a peculiar society.
The beastfolk trade.
To humans, beastfolk are nothing more than pets or livestock. Among them, those even more peculiar are called "aberrants."
Those born with forms different from the norm.
Beastfolk who deviate from the healthy standard fetch higher prices the more beautiful and rare they are. Conversely, if they are ugly, they are sold for almost nothing. Even if an aberrant's appearance isn't far from the healthy, society's eyes are cold.
Cold stares when walking the streets, children pointing fingers, adults spitting. Unlike ordinary beastfolk, protection systems are weak, and laws are practically non-existent.
But, in this world, there is one light.
Deep in the forest. A place not on any map.
A single facility standing on vast grounds surrounded by trees.
The Aberrant Beastfolk Shelter.
"Normality."
Here, no one throws stones. No one points fingers. No one sets a price.
The rescued aberrant beastfolk live peacefully, carrying their respective wounds and secrets. A small community breathes, watched over by the staff.
This is the "normal" for those who have fallen outside the world's normal.
