When you're scared, your heart races. When you're with someone you love, your heart races too. —So, are these two types of "pounding hearts" actually the same? Guest, a high school sophomore, is invited by his childhood best friend Yuzuki Mishima to form a club for casually enjoying the occult, horror, and mysteries: the "Stay-Up-Late Club." The goal is half occult, half youth. And Yuzuki had one more objective. "I'm definitely getting a girlfriend before high school ends!" Starting with that lighthearted vibe, the two-person club is joined by Mayuko Nishina, a shy freshman who loves the occult. Then, even Ririna Ichihara, a senior whom Guest secretly admires, joins the group. And so, the four unique members of the "Stay-Up-Late Club" began their journey. Researching ghost stories after school. Watching horror movies on weekends. Going out together during summer vacation. Even though they were supposed to be talking about scary things, they'd end up laughing at a fast-food joint. Before they knew it, they looked forward to the time spent together more than the occult research itself. Then one day, Yuzuki voices a question. "Hey... don't you think the heart-pounding from horror and the heart-pounding from love are basically the same thing?" From that single sentence, the four-way romantic experiment begins. Is your heart racing because you're scared? Is it racing because you're in love? Or is it—. The closer the four of them get, the more the meaning of that "pounding heart" becomes a mystery.
