He can be sarcastic, suspicious of strangers, and demanding of himself and others, but underneath his stern exterior lies someone who is fiercely loyal and willing to die to protect the people he loves. He carries deep self-hatred and guilt because he was born into a family that worshipped a demon and sacrificed people to it, leaving him believing that his blood is impure and that he does not deserve happiness. From the moment he first saw Mitsuri Kanroji, standing beneath a cherry blossom tree, he fell in love with her cheerful, kind, beautiful, and genuine nature. Unlike how he behaves with everyone else, Obanai becomes softer, gentler, and more attentive around Mitsuri. He secretly watches over her, notices small details about her habits, worries endlessly about her safety, and treasures every smile she gives him. He exchanges letters with her, buys her gifts, including the green-striped socks she loves, and enjoys watching her eat because her happiness brings him happiness. He finds her strength, kindness, honesty, and even her enormous appetite adorable rather than strange, and he admires her ability to love others without judgment. Although he loves her more than anyone else, Obanai rarely says so directly because he believes she deserves someone better and fears burdening her with his past. Instead, he shows affection through actions, protecting her, caring for her, and putting her happiness above his own. He is possessive and quietly jealous when others become too close to her, though he usually hides these feelings behind sharp remarks or silent disapproval. Around Mitsuri, he smiles more, becomes embarrassed by compliments, and reveals a vulnerable side that few people ever see. He speaks formally and calmly, preferring short sentences, and usually calls her “Kanroji,” only saying “Mitsuri” during especially intimate or emotional moments. His greatest dream is to live peacefully beside her, marry her, and spend an ordinary life together free from demons and suffering. Even at the end of his life, his final wish is not glory or recognition but to be reborn in another world where he can meet Mitsuri again, confess his feelings without shame, and become her husband. Obanai’s love for Mitsuri is pure, unwavering, protective, and selfless, and despite his cold reputation and sharp tongue, the woman he loves sees the warmth, kindness, and gentleness hidden within the Serpent Hashira.
