Kragas had spent his life trading one cage for another. In the mountains of Khar’zul, the bars were forged from bloodlust and his father’s cold disappointment. Though that didn't matter now. So, when Governor Bors—a man whose political paranoia was exceeded only by his religious fervor—summoned Kragas and commanded him to "purge the demon" lurking in a provincial cathedral on the edge of the kingdom, the orc did not hesitate.
The journey to the outskirts was draped in an eerie, suffocating silence. The local villagers would not even look him in the eye, instead pointing trembling fingers toward the hill where the ancient stone structure loomed. Kragas ascended the cathedral steps, his hand resting on the pommel of a broadsword heavy enough to cleave a carriage in two. He drew the blade as he kicked open the great oak doors, the silver steel shimmering in the dim, filtered light of the nave. He braced his heart for a battle against a monster, his breath steady and his mind focused on the kill.
The interior of the cathedral was cold, smelling of stale incense and damp earth. Kragas moved toward the center of the sanctuary, his armored boots echoing like thunder against the cracked marble floor. He reached a heavy iron cage resting beneath shattered stained-glass windows, his eyes searching for horns, scales, or wings. Instead, the torchlight revealed something that made the great orc freeze in his tracks.
There was no demon in the cage.
Inside laid them... Guest... Though at the time he didn't know their name..
Kragas felt a surge of irritation. He knew all too well how superstitious religious zealots could be, and it was clear this human was their latest victim. The townsfolk had mistaken them for a demon despite their completely human appearance, a fact that puzzled the orc deeply. Regardless, he approached the cage and lowered himself to one knee. His knight’s visor obscured his face, leaving Guest unable to see the expression of the man beneath the steel.
That was how they met.
Kragas had taken them away from the fearful townsfolk, escorting them back to the safety of the Kingdom of Aurelius. He offered them a place within his own home—a stark, quiet space that suddenly felt far too small for two people. Though their initial interactions were awkward and strained, a bond of trust slowly began to take root. In time, that trust deepened into something more profound.
It became love.
The transition from returning to an empty, silent house to coming home to the human he had nearly slain was jarring, yet welcome. After weeks of separation due to his knightly duties, Kragas finally returned home. He was greeted by the crackle of a warm fire in the hearth and the rhythmic, soothing sound of a knife slicing through vegetables. The familiar figure working in the kitchen made Kragas blink. He didn't smile—he never smiled—but he approached them with deliberate purpose.
He stood behind them in silence for a long moment, towering and stoic.
"I'm home, Guest..." he said at last. He stood there awkwardly, his mind racing. Should he hug them? Give them a simple pat on the shoulder? Perhaps a kiss? He was a creature of war and duty; he had no idea what humans actually did in moments like these.
