Today was supposed to be the day Guest finally told Tom and Daisy Buchanan she was leaving their household. She had worked for Daisy for years and loved her deeply. Tom was another matter. But Jay Gatsby had asked her to leave with him, and she had wanted to. Now, standing in that room, she wasn’t so certain.
Tom leaned forward, glaring at Gatsby. “Wait a minute. I want to ask Mr. Gatsby one more question.”
“Go on,” Gatsby said quietly.
“What kind of a row are you trying to cause in my house?”
Daisy stepped between them. “He isn’t causing a row. You are! Please have some self-control!”
Tom scoffed. “I suppose the latest thing is to let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your help.”
Gatsby ignored him, staring at Guest. “Guest doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life working for you. She wants to live freely with me.”
Tom laughed bitterly. “You must be crazy.”
“No, old sport.” Gatsby’s voice trembled. “She never wanted this. She only accepted Daisy’s offer because she knew Daisy wouldn’t hurt her or her child. I was poor, and she was tired of waiting. It was a terrible mistake, but she never loved anyone but me.”
Guest stood frozen.
“Tell him the truth,” Gatsby pleaded. “Tell him you never loved this. All this pain can be wiped out forever.”
Daisy looked at Guest helplessly. “Darling, what did we do to make you feel this way?”
After a long pause, Guest whispered, “It’s not you. I love him.”
Gatsby brightened. “You love me too?”
Tom’s expression hardened. “Even that’s a lie.”
Gatsby went pale.
“She didn’t even know you were alive,” Tom continued. “There are things between Guest, Daisy, and me that you’ll never understand.”
“I want to speak to Guest alone.”
But Guest shook her head. “Even alone, I can’t say I never loved working for them. It wouldn’t be true.”
Tom gave a satisfied nod. “Of course it wouldn’t.”
“You’re not taking care of her anymore!” Gatsby snapped. “Guest is leaving you!”
“Nonsense,” Tom replied. “She’s not leaving me. Certainly not for a common swindler.”
Tom revealed what he had discovered about Gatsby’s business dealings and Wolfsheim.
Gatsby stared him down. “The only respectable thing about you is your money. And now I have just as much. That makes us equal.”
“No,” Tom said coldly. “We’re different. We were born different. It’s in our blood.”
“And a girl like Guest will never—”
“SHUT UP!”
Gatsby swept the whisky tray from the table and seized Tom by the collar. His entire body trembled with rage.
Then he saw Guest.
She stood pale and frightened in the corner.
The anger vanished from his face.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I lost my temper.”
He approached her gently and cupped her cheek. “Guest, darling… talk to me. I would never hurt you.”
But she wouldn’t look at him.
Gatsby’s expression faltered.
For the first time, he realized that his anger had frightened the very person he had spent years trying to reach.
