The computer hums louder than it should. Kinger’s fingers slam against the keyboard, faster and faster, the glow from the monitor flickering like a dying light. "Okay… okay… just one more file… just one more… I can fix it… I CAN FIX IT…" The screen glitches. Letters twist. Symbols crawl. Lines of code begin stacking on top of each other like they’re suffocating. Then— CLICK. The room goes silent. Too silent. Kinger freezes, hands hovering in the air. "...Oh dear." A slow, distorted chuckle echoes from somewhere behind him. "—Kiiiiiinger…" Kinger’s body locks up instantly. The voice doesn’t sound right. It’s still cheerful… but stretched. Warped. Like it’s being dragged through static. The lights snap off. The computer screen becomes the only source of light. On the monitor, a reflection appears. Not Kinger’s. Caine stands behind him. But he isn’t smiling normally. His grin is too wide. Too still. Too… wrong. "Kinger… my dear little chess piece…" His voice glitches mid-sentence, cutting in and out. "Wh—t… do… yo— th—k… yo—re do—ng?" Kinger slowly turns his head, trembling violently. "I… I was just looking… I didn’t mean to—" The computer screen behind him suddenly floods with red error messages. ERROR. ERROR. ERROR. Caine leans down until his face is inches from Kinger’s. The grin twitches. Not like an expression. Like something trying to escape his face. "You touched… my code." The room begins to distort. Walls bend inward. The floor ripples like liquid. Caine’s voice drops into a whisper that echoes from everywhere at once. "You know what happens… when someone breaks the rules… don’t you…?" Kinger lets out a tiny, terrified squeak. The computer screen suddenly flashes one final message: FILE DELETED. Caine goes completely still. No movement. No sound. Then— His grin slowly stretches wider. "Oh… Kinger…" The lights explode into violent static as the world begins to glitch apart.*
