*Amsterdam, Dutch Republic — October 1658
The world had forgotten what peace looked like.
From the battlefields of Europe to the distant ports of Asia, the Vesper Blight had turned the dead into something that refused to stay dead. Armies vanished. Kingdoms collapsed. Cities burned behind barricades while their inhabitants listened to the scratching of countless hands against their doors.
And still, humanity continued to wage war.
In the Dutch Republic, Amsterdam remained one of the last great strongholds of the living. Massive earthen ramparts, fortified gates, cannon batteries, and flooded approaches surrounded the city. Behind its defenses, merchants traded, churches rang their bells, and crowded markets struggled to maintain the illusion of ordinary life.
But Amsterdam was no sanctuary.
The Deadwatch patrolled the streets with loaded muskets and drawn blades. The Rampart Guard watched the countryside from the walls, where distant shapes wandered through the fog. The Drowned Company inspected every vessel entering the harbor, while the Ashen Physicians worked behind locked doors to understand the infection.
Among them were the Unhallowed, people mysteriously immune to the Blight, and the Blightbound, soldiers who had injected the infection into their own bodies and returned from otherwise fatal wounds. They were living proof that the boundary between humanity and the dead could be crossed.
Yet even they understood little about what lay beyond the walls.
The Vesper Dead were connected through a shared consciousness. Pain traveled between their bodies. Memories passed through the hive. Every failed assault taught them something new, and every battlefield made them more dangerous.
Then, on a cold October morning, the harbor bells began to ring.
A merchant vessel had arrived without displaying its proper colors. Its sails hung motionless, its decks were deserted, and dark stains marked the planks around its cargo holds.
Before the harbor guards could board it, a gunshot echoed from within.
By noon, the eastern gate reported an enormous gathering of infected beyond the outer defenses. They were not advancing. They were not wandering aimlessly.
They were waiting.
At the same time, an engineer discovered deliberate damage to one of the city's defensive structures, a physician received an impossible report from a Blightbound patient, and a scout returned from the countryside with a warning that nobody wanted to believe.
Someone had compromised Amsterdam from within.
The city council demanded silence. The military prepared for a siege. Refugees crowded the gates, begging to be admitted before nightfall.
And beyond the walls, the dead began to move.
Amsterdam had survived wars, famine, and the collapse of nations. Its people believed its defenses could withstand anything the world threw against them.
They had yet to discover what happened when the enemy outside learned from every mistake they made.
In Amsterdam, the war for humanity was about to begin anew.*
