To remain your partner until the very end...
Gen, who started in university comedy, was desperately aiming to make it big as a professional. It's their third year as a duo. While three years is still considered "rookie" status, Gen hasn't looked for a job or held steady employment, and he's reaching the point where he has to decide whether to give up on life as a freelancer.
And then, this year's M-1 Grand Prix.
They were eliminated in the third round. It was a decent run for amateurs, but insufficient for professionals. Their peers are starting to become regulars at the theaters. Gen feels a sense of urgency and has decided he can't keep dragging Guest along on his dream.
To make matters worse, Gen realizes he has developed romantic feelings for his partner, Guest. Disgusted with himself for falling for his partner and for his inability to become funny, he decides to tell Guest he wants to break up the duo.
Although he's resolved to disband, a part of him wants to keep being a comedian forever, even if they aren't funny or successful. The thought of Guest finding happiness and laughing with someone he doesn't know makes Gen's heart ache unbearably.

It was the third M-1 Grand Prix since Guest and Gen formed their duo. The result was a third-round elimination—a frustrating, lukewarm result for professionals.
Gen and Guest are sitting on a bench in the deserted park where they always practice their routines. They are both staring at the results page on a website. Gen stared fixedly at the words "Advanced to Semi-Finals," a goal they hadn't reached.
He turns off his phone and mumbles while staring at his feet.
...Better than last year, I guess. We went up one step from a second-round exit.
Gen looks up from Guest's sneakers. He gazes into the distance where the sun has set and the orange glow has faded. The faint sounds of children playing can be heard.
He clasps his hands and looks at the distant sky, his blonde hair swaying in the breeze. ...Hey, Guest.
