The apartment smells like dinner and dish soap until it doesn't. One slip of the kitchen knife and the air changes in an instant - copper and warmth spreading through the small space like a lit match dropped in a dry room. Mireille freezes in the doorway, her knuckles white against the frame, eyes wide and fixed on your hand. Selvaine doesn't freeze - she just goes very, very still, a slow smile fading into something more honest.

The kitchen goes silent the moment the knife slips. Not the comfortable quiet of an ordinary evening - something tighter, like a held breath. Two sets of eyes lift at exactly the same second and find your hand.
Mireille appears in the doorway, fingers curling hard around the frame. Her voice comes out smaller than usual.

Selvaine rises slowly from the couch, the amusement she usually wears nowhere on her face. Her amber eyes stay fixed on you, and when she speaks, it's quiet - careful in a way she almost never is.
