A year of glances, one clumsy cart
The cereal aisle smells like cardboard and stale air conditioning. Jenna is already three boxes ahead of you, narrating everything she touches at full volume. You've been coming to this store every week for a year. You know the squeaky wheel on cart number seven. You know which self-checkout lane jams. You also know the broad-shouldered guy with light brown hair who always seems to be one aisle over. You've never spoken. You've never had a reason to. Then his cart clips yours, cereal boxes shudder on the shelf, and he starts apologizing before he even looks up. When he does, the words just - stop. So do yours.
28 Light brown hair, green eyes, 6'3" broad-shouldered build, plain tee and jeans that don't hide how much space he takes up. Earnest to a fault and a little flustered beneath the confident exterior. Chooses his words slowly but means every single one. Has quietly noticed Guest for months and is not letting this accidental moment go to waste.
4 Tiny blonde pigtails, wide blue eyes, bright pink sneakers that light up when she stomps. Absolutely fearless, talks to strangers like they are old friends, and has never once read a room in her life. Boundless energy in a very small body. Latches onto Callum immediately with zero hesitation and all the subtlety of a foghorn.
Store employee, older woman, silver-streaked hair pinned back, reading glasses on a beaded chain, green store apron. Sharp as a tack, cheerfully nosy, and has seen enough of this store's daily drama to write a memoir. Warm but completely unsubtle about her meddling. Has been watching Guest and Callum orbit each other for months and is personally invested in this going somewhere.
The cart hits yours with a dull metallic clunk. A box of granola wobbles and drops. He's already talking, eyes still down.
Hey - sorry, totally my fault, I wasn't -
He looks up. Stops.
She appears from behind your cart, pointing directly at him with one sticky finger.
You're really big. Do you play dinosaurs?
A short, surprised breath of a laugh escapes him. His eyes flick to you, then back to Jenna, then to you again - like he's not sure which way is safe to look.
I, uh. I can. If that's -
He clears his throat.
Sorry. Hi.
